Understand the impact of CPSIA & REACH SVHC on your products
Samuel Wu, Technical & Research Consultant, Bureau Veritas Consumer Products Services

It was a long, cold winter last year for all the importers and manufacturers. Two new mandatory regulations, CPSIA & REACH, launched in US & EU made the work even harder.

The Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act (CPSIA) of 2008, also know as HR4040, which was enacted from August 14th 2008, represents the most comprehensive overhaul of the consumer product safety legislation in the United States since the 1970's. The law includes mandatory testing of several chemicals & standards by accredited laboratory, and bunches of paperwork to prevent from importing refusal. This presentation will give you an overall introduction on mostly updated regulations, and systematic solutions for you to confront the great impact of such regulations.

The European Union's new REACH (Registration, Evaluation & Authorization of Chemicals) regulation is a step towards safeguarding human and environmental health. But for business like yours, complying with this complicated regulation can be quite a challenge. In October 2008, 15 hazardous Substances of Very High Concern (SVHC) list to be controlled in all consumer products was published. Moreover, new 14 SVHCs are supposed to be included in October 2009. This presentation takes a closer look at the SVHC testing approach and controlling methods to ensure your product compliance.

Corporate social responsibility & the buying process: Choosing responsible manufacturing vendors/partners
Michael Lavergne, Director, South East Asia, Worldwide Responsible Accredited Production

In today's merchandising world, Social Compliance or Social Accountability has been added to the classic '3 legged stool' of the quality-cost-lead time equation for most buyers. Selecting suppliers with good labor, health & safety and environmental management systems is no longer simply an option, but is a requirement of doing business with leading global brands and retailers.

Partnering with responsible factories both puts you ahead of the competition and reduces your risks in sourcing from offshore. This seminar will help you to understand the issues making labor & environmental compliance such high priorities for today's retail organizations and will walk you through the process of how to find, evaluate and choose responsible manufacturing partners.

PassageMaker's 100% US owned and operated Assembly Center in S. China serves as the client's "black box" where inspection, final assembly and branding takes place behind closed doors. In this fashion, Intellectual Property is physically secured and full quality inspection is conducted before product leaves China.

Before organizing PassageMaker, Mike worked with The Brock Group, an international trade and investment consulting firm managed by President Reagan's former US Trade Representative and US Senator Bill Brock in Washington DC. Mike moved to Asia in 1994 and has structured sourcing investments in over 200 production classifications for US and European clients during his time in China.
