Sourcing in Eastern China - A logistics perspective

Towards the end of 2009, more people are talking about a possible economic upturn. However, worries about a double dip recession all the way into 2010 still loom large. And it is generally agreed that consumers are much more cost conscious than they were before the global financial crisis. There are still impending pressures on retailers or traders to improve their sourcing performance. On the other hand, tremendous changes are taking place in the business landscape of China as a world factory. Companies which buy from China are now dealing with challenges such rising cost of land and labour, currency re-valuation, increased trade tariff, supplier bankruptcies... Executives involved in supply chain decisions need to constantly review sourcing alternatives and think out of the box.

Logistics issues are some major concerns in supply chain management. In his speech and Q&A session, Henry Wah will share with audience his industry knowledge from the perspectives of shipping and port logistics. Topics to be discussed in his speech include:

Nowadays, new requirements in various markets are the continual challenges for the whole consumer product supply chain since product safety is the growing concern in public sectors worldwide. The Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act (CPSIA) of 2008 and the Illinois Lead Poisoning Prevention Act represent the most comprehensive overhaul of the consumer product safety legislation in the United States since the 1970s. The law specifies mandatory testing of a number of commonly used chemicals and other standards. This presentation will give you an overall introduction on mostly updated regulations, and systematic solutions for textile & apparel, toys and juvenile products industries to confront the great impact of such regulation.

Toy Safety Certification Program overview

The Toy Safety Certification Program (TSCP) initiated in the wake of CPSIA has finally come out-and it is a comprehensive solution developed and managed by the Toy Industry Association (TIA) targeted at addressing safety issues for toys sold in US markets.

To get a better understanding of TSCP, the program overview, TSCP requirements and processes will be introduced in the presentation. Also a TSCP IT platform "ECS" (electronic certification system) will be discussed as well as certification procedures via ECS system.

About the speakers

Thaddaeus Mueller holds a master degree in Economics and Business Administration from the Catholic University of Eichstaett, Germany and studied at the Stellenbosch School of Business, South Africa and the Liber¨¤ Universit¨¤ di Bolzano, Italy. Before he joined Fiducia Management Consultants in 2004, he worked in the automotive industry and in the fabrics and fibers division of a large US technology company. He has gained remarkable experience in advising international clients on trading and sourcing structures in Hong Kong and China from industries as diverse as toys, machinery, packaging, textiles, lighting, furniture to name but a few.

Thaddaeus works as Business Development Manager with Fiducia Management Consultants (www.fiducia-china.com), a multidisciplinary firm focusing on Greater China Consultancy. Fiducia was founded in 1982 and provides a wide range of services to assist international companies in implementing, expanding or optimizing their business activities in China and Hong Kong. He received his double degrees in Diplomacy and Economics in Washington DC and later went on to gain an International MBA from the University of South Carolina which included a year of full-time graduate level courses at the Harbin Institute of Technology and University of International Business and Economics in Beijing.

Recognized as expert on China sourcing, Mike has been a featured presenter for a number of high profile seminars and trade shows including Global Sources' China Sourcing Fairs in Hong Kong, Shanghai, and Dubai, Boat Tech China, Rotary Foundation, US Chamber of Commerce, British Chamber of Commerce, National Association of Purchasing Managers/ Institute for Supply Management, Small Business Development Bureau and the State Bar of California among others.

As Executive Director of Hutchison Ports China Ltd. (HPC), Henry P. Wah is responsible for the investment and management of container terminal projects in China. He is concurrently the Director, General Manager of Shanghai Container Terminals Ltd. (SCT) and Shanghai Mingdong Container Terminals Ltd. (SMCT), and the Director of Shanghai Pudong International Container Co. Ltd (SPICT). In 2008, these three JVs take up 34% of the market share in Shanghai, which is China's top container port. HPC, SCT, SPICT & SMCT are subsidiaries of Hutchison Port Holdings (HPH), which is the largest private container terminals operator in the world. HPH operates 49 ports in 25 different countries in Asia, Americas, Europe, Africa, and Middle East. HPH is owned by Hutchison Whampoa Group Ltd (HWL), a Fortune 200 company.

Before joining the container terminal industry, Henry was associated with Coca-Cola, having worked in Atlanta, Hong Kong and Beijing as International Trade Manager, Operations Manager and General Manager for a total of nine and half years.

Henry is also a Vice Chairman of Shanghai Public Relations Association (SPRA), an Honourary Professor of Shanghai Normal University (SHNU), and a School Board Member of Western International School of Shanghai (WISS).

Ann Lu is the Asia Technical Service Manager of the Analytical Testing Department at Bureau Veritas Consumer Products Services.

Based in Shanghai, Ann leads a team of technical professionals tasked to provide training and consultation services for Bureau Veritas clients as well as for internal staff. She is responsible for developing analytical tests for textile and footwear products, cookware, toys, electronic products and other consumer goods in accordance to various International Standards and client specifications. She is also responsible for quality control inspection and factory audit for the Green Product Management System.

Since joining Bureau Veritas, Ann has gained substantial exposure in various Asian consumer markets. Prior to her current posting, she has held positions as Analytical Testing Supervisor at Bureau Veritas Taiwan and as the Technical Service and Support Manager at Bureau Veritas Shanghai.

Frank Chan is currently the Technical manager of Shen Zhen Laboratory SGS-CSTC Standards Technical Service Co., Ltd.

He has worked in toys and children’s product industry for 18 years. He is experienced in product design, manufacture processes, quality assurance and quality control in famous brand holders, testing in third party laboratory, etc. He is an expert who every familiar with manufacture, safety regulations, and reliability, inspection, testing and quality management in toys industry.
